Bedding Sets and Infant Care

Written by Author on September 27th, 2009

When buying the crib for your nursery, your mind will naturally turn to bedding next. Many crib bedding sets have from 4 up to 10 pieces included, but how many of those should you actually use? To be honest, the only thing you really need is a couple of crib sheets, because modern crib safety standards recommend keeping cribs free of all soft bedding. If you want to get the most for your money, skip the crib set and the useless (but cute) accessories. Instead, invest in a half dozen comfortable, high quality crib sheets.

Both comforters and crib bumpers are now on the “not recommended” list, because they pose a pretty serious risk of suffocation. Swaddling blankets or sleep sacks are the best alternative to loose blankets and quilts. Wearable blankets are sort of like a cross between clothing and a sleeping bag. Swaddling blankets have come a long way, with many mow featuring special fasteners to keep the blanket snug. Although swaddling is a comfort to many infants, others simply do not like the feeling of being bound. If you rock your baby a lot, you might still want a quilt or blanket to wrap around him or her. But remove the comforter before baby goes into the crib.

Some people choose to use a sleep wedge, which is designed to keep babies off their tummies (believed to increase the risk of SIDS). It should be pointed out here that infants are unable to roll onto their tummies until they are about 6 months old. At this point, SIDS risks are considerably reduced anyway. Since foam is a soft material, these wedges could do more harm than good, by contributing to suffocation risks.

Other items included in a bedding set can include a window valance, diaper stacker, toy bag, and crib skirt. These can be very tempting because they match the crib bedding, but your baby will not suffer without them.

If you do decide to get a bedding set, go for unisex baby bedding like Versailles Black and White baby bedding. It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.
