Ear training is the process by which a student can learn to differentiate between various periods, chords and rhythms.  These aural skills are necessary for musicians as they allow them to transcribe, play by ear, and sight-read accurately, as well as acquiring benefits in terms of composition (one of them, having the capability to transfer the melody in your thoughts to paper or your instrument), and more.

Aural skills must be learned by executing, consequently it is advisable to have effective workouts in order to improve them.  To start with, students can try simple call-and-response-type workouts such as reproducing single notes: you can take a recording, or have a partner or tutor play one note, thereafter try to sing or play the same note.  This is known as an “absolute pitch” exercise, and it will establish a perception in the student for what specific note sounds like; if you’re able to distinguish the note quickly, you may have great pitch.  This type of workout can also be carried out with several notes played in a series, becoming more and more difficult, which will work on memory together with recognition of notes.

Another necessary element to focus on is the identification of intervals.  Listen to two notes played one after another and try to determine the interval between the two, starting with the basics like octaves and perfect fifths before going to other intervals.  Being able to accurately determine intervals means you have relative pitch, which is regarded as a significant talent for musicians. Once you can identify intervals, you can use that skill to distinguish guitar chords.  Students might also think about using relevant workouts with the purpose of differentiating easily between major and minor chords.  Additionally, once intervals have been mastered, students can move on to exercises to differentiate among different types of scales.
