There is great peril in permitting it to go on, because you feel that is is only harmless nipping. Playful nipping will eventually, turn into serious and dangerous biting.
No animal owner should bring up a dog puppy that may injure children, the guests or anyone who just happens to be there. If your dog has a biting problem then you must do something to stop it. Not correcting the problem will definitely end in serious trouble.
If your doggy is prone to biting and manages to get out alone, it can bite children playing on the streets, and causes serious injury, it would definitely be put down as a treacherous animal, and you end up being sued for damages. In order to prevent things of such grievous nature happening to your family members, you and your doggy, the only thing to do is to learn puppy training biting.
Biting is a negative behavior in any pet dog, and has to be corrected when the dog is very young. All dogs love to chew, so to begin with, we must have an adequate supply of chew toys around. This goes a long way into discouraging the young puppy mouthing every object it can put its mouth around, simply because mouthing is the beginning of all biting problems.
If your doggy stayed long enough with its offspring it would have been taught by its mother, and litter mates, how to hold back its biting tendencies. If a mother dog is bitten by one of the litter, the mother will yelp. The puppy is surprised and concerned by its mothers sudden cry, and if the pup repeats its offence, the mother would yelp louder with a snarl and begins, shunning the biting puppy.
This is how puppies get to know that they cannot use that pressure with their jaws and teeth, and if even with this lesson, the puppy continues to bite its mother, she will react harshly. Thus the puppy gets to know from its mother and playmates in the social pack that biting will not be tolerated.
Seeing that we have detached the puppy from this natural training environment, we have do the same thing its mother does to stop the puppy biting. The method us humans could use to carry out these training sessions, is to yelp in a high-pitched voice each and every time the dog tries to mouth or bite us anywhere on our body, or the clothes we are wearing. A wee bit of exaggeration will go a long way in getting the point across. If the biting continues, start taking no notice the puppy after the ‘yelp’ and just stop your play activities The doggy will soon work out that biting leads to all the enjoyment and affection being stopped, and will realize that forceful chomping is not an acceptable behavior pattern.
Another technique to stop puppy from nipping is by using a muzzle. This to onlookers, may appear to be a bit cruel or extreme, but it is not. A muzzle will not hurt the puppy in any way. It just prevents it from opening its gob wide enough to bite anything. The pup will soon understand the reason why it has been muzzled, and will soon learn. Every dog owner must bear in mind, that, a dog that bites, is definitely the most critical dog problems, which any dog owner could be unlucky enough to be troubled with. Play biting can lead to real injurious biting and steps to stop dog biting must be taken before the unthinkable happens.
