Paid opinion surveys are a huge business on the Internet. More than 700 survey makers in the U.S. make thousands of surveys every week. Just one of these, Greenfield Online, paid out over $4,200,000 to survey participants in 2007! They pay because they need to get volunteers to participate. They need a large number of them to get the variety of demographic qualifications they need.

The impetus (and the money!) for paid opinion surveys comes from large companies that have to know what consumers are thinking.
