The number one search engine on the internet is Google and they provide a great tool to begin your journey. They will give you all the numbers you need to start. You need to already have a free account with them. You can use a gmail account if you have one. If not then this is your first step. When your done you can just search for the free keyword tool in Google. The first site that pops up will be it.
Leave all of the settings on default and lets begin to brainstorm. In the box that states enter one keyword or phrase per line, type “MLM Leads”. Or whatever you want to search for. Enter the captcha code and click the button get keyword ideas. Google will bring back several columns of information. The first column is the phrase you typed in and a list of related terms that are searched each month. We want the information under the global column for a good average of numbers. This figure tells us how many times a term is searched per month during the last year. Lets keep the search at least 500-1000 per month. Every marketer is different and this is a personal choice.
Put a check mark next to the terms that look good. Do not waste time on searches under 500. Do not waste your time with anything less then that. If you click on the global monthly search, it will move the list from low to high or vise-versa. Do not worry about anything else at this point. I would select the ones that look good by placing the check mark next to them.
Next click the download to text file button on the right and Google will automatically take all of the keywords you selected and place them into a notepad list.

Keyword competition research is very important. Pick the wrong term and waste a lot of time trying to rank for it. Your goal is to make it on the first page of Google. So do not skip this step.
After you have downloaded your keywords into a text file you can begin to copy the terms one by one into google. Under each of the top ten results is the information that SEO tool returns. Specifically we are looking for the page rank for each site, PR. You will want to take the average PR for the first ten sites on Google. We are looking for an average under 3.0 for a good keyword to target. Trash everything else. .
It really is that easy to research for good keywords. Find a word or phrase that is being searched for at least 1000 per month and make sure the top ten sites do not have an average page rank of over 3.0.
